Man Overboard Procedures (MOB)
Man Overboard - When you are out sailing toss a gallon milk jug or buoy to simulate a man overboard or Person In Water (PIW). Count the seconds until you cannot see the PIW. What did you get? One minute? If you got more than that, it must have been calm or your boat was not moving very much. With a buoy being about the same size as a human head, you can tell how little time you have with the person viewable. For purposes of this lesson, the phrase: Person In the Water” will be called the Coast Guard acronym, “PIW”. It is essential that the Captain and first mate of a vessel is very familiar with the procedure for rescuing a PIW. The following exercise is designed to accomplish this.
