Nautical Terminology

Nautical Terminology has evolved over the centuries that covers every important aspect of boating and sailing. Everything related to sailing a boat has a unique name. In order to understand the significance of this, take for example when the Captain gives the order to “Set the Mainsail”. This order would set in motion the following actions by the crew. The crew would connect the shackle (attached to the end of the main halyard) to the grommet located at the head of the mainsail. They would then set the mainsail by pulling down on main halyard until the luff of the mainsail is tight. The free end of the halyard is routed through the sheave and then to the main-halyard winch which assists in setting the mainsail.

Imagine attempting to execute this simple maneuver without having a common terminology – especially under emergency or “high wind” conditions. In the 2 following Tables, you will find short definitions of Nautical terminology. Also note that throughout this manual, whenever we use a nautical term, it will be shown in RED. The significance of this is that you may look it up in the appropriate list of terms They are organized by Boat Related Terms and Sail Related Terms
